What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a broad interest into focused, open-ended research questions. They connect related subtopics and refine questions so they can investigate a complex issue from several angles.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can create a focused main question and several connected supporting questions. They can explain the links among the questions and revise the scope when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write questions that ask for one fact or simply turn a topic into a question. They may also list unrelated questions or choose questions too broad to investigate well.

How to Assess It

Give students the topic school start times. Ask them to write one main research question and two connected follow-up questions.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use sticky notes to map a broad topic, cluster related subtopics, then turn each cluster into an open-ended research question.

  2. Write three questions about social media and sleep, then explain which question could guide deeper research and why.

  3. Play Question Sort with cards labeled factual, researchable, too broad, or unrelated, then revise one card in each weak category.

  4. Examine cafeteria food waste, creating one main question and three connected questions that could inform a school improvement proposal.
