What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a question about a topic they want to understand. They use two or more sources to find accurate facts, then share an answer that stays on topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a focused question and find related facts in at least two sources. The student can share an accurate answer through speaking, writing, or drawing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions that are too broad or based only on opinions. They may copy every detail instead of choosing facts that answer their question. Some think one book or website counts as multiple sources.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short page and a labeled diagram about frogs. Ask them to write one question and two facts that answer it, using one fact from each source.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a photo card and a short nonfiction page about the same animal, then have them record one fact from each source.
List student questions about bees, choose one class question, and write answers supported by facts from two read-alouds.
Play Fact Match: students match fact cards from two sources to the question each fact answers.
Have students interview the custodian and read a recycling poster, then create a class card explaining how to recycle at school.
