What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how nonfiction texts use facts, headings, labels, pictures, and ordered steps to teach a topic. They use these features when speaking, drawing, or writing to explain information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short nonfiction page, a student can point to a feature and explain how it helps the reader learn. The student can create an informational page with accurate facts, a clear heading, and a labeled picture.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every picture as decoration instead of using it to learn information. They may confuse an opinion with a fact or add headings and labels that do not match the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give students a page about frogs with a heading, two facts, and a labeled diagram. Ask them to circle one helpful feature, explain what it teaches, then create a labeled frog fact box.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a nonfiction page, sticky notes, and crayons, then have them mark the heading, facts, labels, and picture evidence.
Ask, “Which feature helped you learn most, and why?” then have students write one sentence using evidence from the page.
Play Feature Match by pairing cards showing headings, labels, diagrams, and facts with cards explaining each feature’s job.
Examine a cereal box or class menu, then identify how labels and organized information help people use it.
