What Students Need to Do

Students notice parts of a text that teach information, such as facts, headings, labels, and pictures. They use these parts in drawings, shared writing, or simple informational pages.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point to a fact, heading, label, or picture and explain how it helps the reader learn. They can create a page with a clear topic, one accurate fact, and a matching labeled picture.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any book with pictures tells a story. They may give opinions as facts, add unrelated labels, or draw pictures that do not match the information.

How to Assess It

Give each student a picture of a frog. Ask, "Make a page that teaches one true thing about frogs, using a heading or label," then have students point to what they used.

   Give pairs an informational page, sticky notes, and crayons, then have them mark a heading, fact, picture, and label.

   Read a page about penguins and ask, "Which part helped you learn something new, and how did it help?"

   Play a text feature hunt where students earn a token for finding a heading, label, fact, or helpful picture.
