What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pick out two details from an informational read-aloud. With a prompt or picture cue, they tell how those details fit together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student recalls both details and states a clear link, such as order, cause, shared topic, or role. The explanation matches the text and uses picture cues only as support.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name two details but explain each one separately. They may guess from pictures, reverse the order of events, or confuse what happened first with what caused something.
How to Assess It
- Read: “A seed gets water. Then it sprouts.” Ask, “How are the water and the sprout connected?” Look for: “The water helps the seed sprout.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards from a butterfly life cycle; students place two cards together and tell how one stage leads to the next.
After a read-aloud about helpers, ask, “How do the firefighter and dispatcher work together?” and record each child’s answer.
Play Connection Match with text-detail cards; students find a partner card and complete, “These go together because...”
Use a class snack routine to connect washing hands with staying healthy, then have students explain the link to a partner.
