What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find two people, events, ideas, or facts in an informational text. They explain how the two are related using details from the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the two people, events, ideas, or facts being compared. They explain the relationship with clear words such as because, next, both, or different.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name two details without explaining how they relate. They may also confuse sequence with cause, or use vague words such as "they go together."

How to Assess It

Read: "Maya planted a seed. A week later, a sprout appeared." Ask students to explain the connection using "because" or "so."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards showing a seed growing, then have them order the cards and explain how each event connects.

  2. Ask students to finish the prompt, "The firefighter and the paramedic are connected because..." after reading a short nonfiction passage.

  3. Play Connection Match by pairing detail cards from a familiar text and explaining each match with because, next, both, or different.

  4. Use a class schedule to discuss how arriving, unpacking, and morning work connect through sequence and purpose.
