What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how writers use facts, definitions, examples, comparisons, and text features to make information clear. They explain why a technique works and use it in their own informational writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify techniques such as definitions, facts, examples, headings, and comparisons in an informational text. They explain each technique’s effect and use suitable techniques in their own paragraph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a feature, such as a heading, without explaining how it helps the reader. They may also confuse evidence, examples, and opinions or add facts that do not support the main idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with a definition and an example. Ask, “How does each technique help explain the topic?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an informational paragraph cut into strips, then have them label each strip as a fact, definition, example, or comparison.
Ask students to explain in writing which technique best clarifies an unfamiliar topic and support their choice with a text example.
Play Technique Match by having teams pair technique cards with sample sentences and explain each match for a point.
Have students create a pet care guide using a heading, two facts, a definition, and one example for a new pet owner.
