What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read two sources about one subject and identify each source's key points and supporting details. They combine related facts and explain how the sources agree, differ, or add information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies a key point shared by both sources and selects relevant details from each one. The student clearly explains whether the details agree, differ, or add new information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize each text separately without connecting the information. They may confuse a key point with a small detail or claim two facts conflict when they actually add different information.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short paragraphs about animal camouflage. Ask them to name one shared point, cite one detail from each paragraph, and explain how the details connect.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two printed texts, colored pencils, and yarn to mark key points and physically connect related details across the pages.
Ask students to write: How does the second text change or add to what you learned from the first text?
Place fact cards from two texts in envelopes, then have teams match related facts and explain each match for a point.
Compare two local weather reports, then have students explain which details together would help someone plan outdoor recess.
