What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read several sources about one subject and identify the main points and supporting facts. They group related details and combine them into a clear explanation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can create a chart that groups related facts from two or more sources. They can write a clear summary showing which ideas agree, differ, or add new information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy facts from each source without grouping related ideas. They may repeat the same detail, include minor facts, or overlook places where sources disagree.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short passages about honeybees. Ask them to sort four details under two key points, then write one sentence combining information from both passages.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fact cards from three animal texts, then have them sort the cards under student-created category headings.
Ask students to write: Which source gives the clearest explanation, and what detail from another source adds useful information?
Play Source Match, where teams match detail cards to a key point and source, then explain each choice.
Compare a weather report, storm safety guide, and local map to create a categorized plan for a severe weather day.
