What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pause at logical points in a text and condense each section into a clear main idea. They create a mental image, sketch, timeline, or diagram to track meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can pause after a section and state its main idea with only the most relevant details. Their sketch, diagram, or mental image accurately reflects the text and helps them explain what comes next.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences instead of summarizing in their own words. They may create a vivid image that includes details unsupported by the text or omit key ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students one paragraph from a complex text. Ask them to write a one-sentence summary and draw or diagram the relationships among its key details.

Ways to Teach It
Give students sticky notes to record a ten-word summary and quick sketch after each section of a challenging text.
Ask students to explain which image, diagram, or timeline best captures a section and cite details supporting their choice.
Run a summary sort where teams match short section summaries and visual representations to passages, then correct weak matches.
Have students turn sections of a workplace report or news article into a concise briefing and one explanatory graphic.
