What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read in manageable chunks and pause to capture what each part means. They put the key idea into their own words and create a sketch, diagram, or mental picture that fits the details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students pause at useful points and state each section's main idea with only the key details. Their sketches, diagrams, or mental images match the text and help them explain what is happening.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy full sentences instead of naming the main point in their own words. They may focus on minor details or draw images that add information unsupported by the text.

How to Assess It

Give students a 300-word passage with two sections, then ask for a one-sentence recap and a labeled sketch for each section.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a passage into four sections, then have pairs add a ten-word gist and quick sketch to each section on chart paper.

  2. Ask students to write which detail most shaped their mental picture, then compare answers with a partner using evidence from the passage.

  3. Play Summary Match by having teams pair section cards with accurate one-sentence recaps and image cards, rejecting distractors.

  4. Use a short news report, and have students create a briefing card with the main point, two details, and a simple diagram.
