What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students stop after manageable sections to identify the main idea and key details. They picture the people, setting, actions, or information described and use that image to check understanding.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students pause after a section and briefly state what happened or what was explained. They create a mental image or sketch based on text details, then reread when their understanding is unclear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy whole sentences instead of stating the main idea and key details. They may draw an interesting scene without using accurate text details or checking whether the image helps clarify meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students one paragraph to read. Ask them to write a one-sentence summary, sketch what they pictured, and label two details from the paragraph.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Read a short passage in chunks, then have students build each scene with paper figures and label evidence from the text.

  2. Ask students to explain which details belong in a summary and which details helped them picture the setting, event, or idea.

  3. Play Summary Sort by having teams place detail cards under key detail, minor detail, or inaccurate detail headings.

  4. Use written directions for assembling a simple paper model, then have students summarize each step and sketch the expected result.
