What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify needs and wants in familiar situations. They connect jobs, tools, and earning money to buying goods and services. They also notice when there is not enough of something for everyone and explain that a choice must be made.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly sorts familiar items as needs or wants and gives a simple reason. The student matches workers to tools and says people work to earn money. When supplies are limited, the student suggests a choice or fair way to share.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every favorite item a need or think anything bought at a store is a want. Some think money comes from a bank or card without connecting it to work. They may think a scarce item is completely gone, rather than available in an amount too small for everyone.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of food, a toy, a nurse, a stethoscope, and two apples for four children. Students mark need or want, match the worker to the tool, explain why people work, and describe the apple problem.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a class store with picture cards, play money, and limited items, then have students choose what to buy and explain why.
Ask, “What job helps our school, what tools does that worker use, and why do people work?”
Play a matching game with worker cards, tool cards, and product cards, then sort purchases into needs and wants.
Study a grocery receipt and discuss which items meet needs, which are wants, and how work provides money to pay.
