What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how limited resources can lead people to trade. They identify buyers, sellers, goods, and services, then describe how barter or money supports an exchange. They also compare common forms of currency.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read a simple market scenario and explain who gives, receives, buys, and sells. They can choose a useful form of money and explain that it should be durable, portable, and easy to divide.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think trade always requires money or that only physical objects can be sold. They may confuse buyers with sellers or assume a person cannot be both. Some think all countries use U.S. dollars.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A town has two oranges and ten families. Explain why trade might happen, identify a buyer and seller, then choose the best money from a dollar, melting ice, or a desk.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs different supply cards and five tokens, then have them trade to obtain the supplies shown on a task card.

  2. Ask, “What might happen when only three soccer balls are available for two classes?” and have students explain a fair exchange.

  3. Play a matching game linking buyer, seller, good, service, barter, and money cards to short market scenarios.

  4. Examine a grocery receipt and pictures of U.S., Canadian, Mexican, and Caribbean money, then identify who bought, sold, and paid.
