What Students Need to Do: Students match each place with the money commonly used there. They identify the U.S. dollar, Canadian dollar, Mexican peso, and examples from Caribbean countries and territories. They use names, symbols, and pictures as clues.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sort currency images by location and name each currency. They explain that the dollar symbol may represent different currencies. They also recognize that Caribbean places do not all use the same money.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every currency called a dollar is the same. They may treat the Caribbean as one country with one currency. Some assume a peso and a dollar have equal value.
How to Assess It: Give students destination cards for the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Jamaica. Have them match each card to a currency and circle one clue that supports each match.

Lesson moves

Set out replica currency cards from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, then have pairs sort and label them.
Ask, "Why can the $ symbol mislead a traveler?" Students write two sentences using the United States and Canada as examples.
Play a matching relay with destination cards and currency cards, requiring each student to name one visual clue before earning a point.
Have students plan purchases for a pretend trip to Mexico and one Caribbean island, listing the currency needed at each stop.
