What Students Need to Do: Students name familiar workers and explain what each worker does. They match each worker with tools or equipment used to complete the work.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly pair workers with items such as a firefighter with a hose or a cook with a pan. They explain how each item helps the worker.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a worker’s tool with the product made, such as calling bread a baker’s tool. They may also match tools by appearance instead of use.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of a doctor, cook, and carpenter with a stethoscope, pan, and hammer. Have them match each pair and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Set out safe props such as a toy hammer, mixing spoon, and bandage, then have students match each item to a worker card.
Ask, “Which worker would you like to be, what would you do, and what would you use?”
Play a memory game with worker cards and matching tool cards, requiring students to name the pair when they find a match.
Walk through the school, notice staff at work, and list the items used by a teacher, custodian, cook, or nurse.
