What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how a person can hold several jobs while building a career in one occupation or profession. They compare degrees, certificates, apprenticeships, licenses, workplace training, and experience required for different careers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can distinguish a job from an occupation and describe a career as a sequence of related jobs over time. The student can match several careers with their typical education, training, and credential requirements.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat job, occupation, and career as exact synonyms. They may assume every well-paid career requires a four-year degree or that learning ends once someone is hired. They may also confuse required credentials with preferred experience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one occupation. List two jobs a person might hold in that career, and name the education or training required for each.
