What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the work enslaved people performed in fields, homes, workshops, and transportation. They compare the skills, tools, settings, and economic roles connected to each job.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort examples into agricultural, domestic, skilled trade, and transportation work. They can explain that skilled work still took place under coercion and usually without control over pay or working conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all enslaved people worked in fields or on plantations. They may think skilled trades brought freedom, fair pay, or safe conditions, or that domestic work was less harsh.
How to Assess It
- Give students four jobs: field hand, blacksmith, domestic worker, and wagon driver. Ask them to name one duty, one tool, and one work setting for each.

Give pairs occupation cards to match with tool cards, product cards, and work setting cards.
Using two short primary sources, students write how skilled labor challenges the claim that enslaved people only worked in fields.
Play a clue game where students identify an occupation from its tools, tasks, workplace, and role in the economy.
Use a local historic site's website to identify buildings or objects produced or maintained through enslaved labor.
