What Students Need to Do

Students put Florida history events in date order. They read and create timelines, then use dates to describe what happened before, after, or between events.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly sequence unfamiliar events using dates and place them on a timeline. They compare events with words such as earlier, later, before, and after.

Common Misconceptions

Students may order events by familiarity instead of dates or confuse earlier events with more recent ones. They may also assume equal spaces always represent equal time intervals.

How to Assess It

Give students four dated Florida history events to order and place on a blank timeline. Ask them to identify which event occurred immediately before another.

1. 01

   Give pairs dated Florida history cards and string, then have them clip each event in order to create a classroom timeline.

   Ask students to write three sentences explaining what happened before, after, and between selected events on a Florida history timeline.

3. 03

   Run a timeline relay where teams race to arrange event cards, then check each placement by reading the dates aloud.

4. 04

   Have students create a timeline of five family, school, or community events and label the years between each event.
