Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.8.DP.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.8.DP.1.1
Given a set of real-world bivariate numerical data, construct a scatter plot or a line graph as appropriate for the context.
- MA.8.DP.1.2
Given a scatter plot within a real-world context, describe patterns of association.
- MA.8.DP.1.3
Given a scatter plot with a linear association, informally fit a straight line.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize paired numerical data and display it on a scatter plot. They identify patterns, describe associations, notice outliers, and use trends to make estimates.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make an accurate scatter plot with labeled axes and sensible scales. They describe direction, strength, clusters, and outliers, then use the pattern to make a reasonable estimate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the variables on the axes or treat paired values as separate lists. They may assume every upward pattern proves causation or expect all points to lie on one line.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plot (1,55), (2,61), (3,64), (4,72), and (5,75), describe the association, draw a trend line, and predict the value at 6.

Ways to Teach It
Have students measure class height and arm span, plot each pair, and describe the pattern they see.
Show a scatter plot and ask, “What claim does this graph support, and what evidence from the points supports your claim?”
Give teams cards with data tables, scatter plots, and association descriptions, then have them race to make matching sets.
Analyze daily temperature and electricity use data, draw a trend line, and estimate electricity use for a new temperature.
