What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find area, perimeter, and circumference for polygons, circles, and composite figures. They break complex shapes into familiar parts and use given dimensions to solve problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct measurements and formulas without prompting. They decompose composite figures, show organized work, and label answers with correct units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often use diameter as the radius or mix up circumference and area formulas. They may count shared edges in perimeter or forget square units for area.
How to Assess It
- Draw a 10-by-6 rectangle with a semicircle attached along a 6-unit side. Ask students to find the total area and outer perimeter.

Ways to Teach It
Give students rulers and circular lids to measure radius, diameter, circumference, and area, then compare their calculated and measured results.
Ask students to explain why a shared edge counts for area calculations but not for the outside perimeter.
Play a card match game pairing figure diagrams with formulas, decompositions, and correct area or perimeter values.
Have students design a rectangular garden with a semicircular end, then calculate the sod area and border length.
