What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select and apply area formulas for familiar and composite figures. They break complex shapes into parts, use given or derived measurements, and interpret square units in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a diagram or real situation, students choose suitable formulas, find any missing dimensions, and calculate accurately. They show how parts combine and report a reasonable answer in square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a perimeter formula when the problem asks for area. They may confuse radius with diameter, count overlapping regions twice, or give linear units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 12-meter by 8-meter rectangle has a semicircle with diameter 8 meters attached. Find the total area to the nearest tenth and show your setup.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers to measure a tabletop, door, and circular object, then calculate each area with correct units.
Ask students to explain in writing how they would split an irregular floor plan into familiar shapes without double-counting.
Run a card sort matching figure diagrams, dimensions, area expressions, and answers, including cards with common errors.
Have students compare flooring costs for two room layouts using area, waste allowance, and price per square foot.
