What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether figures have the same size and shape or only the same shape. They match corresponding parts, then use transformations, scale factors, and proportions to find missing measures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify corresponding vertices and justify a classification with transformations or measurements. They set a correct proportion, solve for an unknown length, and check that the answer fits the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often match sides by position instead of corresponding vertices. They may assume equal angles prove congruence, or use an additive difference instead of a scale factor.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: A 4-by-6 photo is enlarged so its short side is 10 inches. Find the long side, then classify the photos and justify your answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs grid-paper triangles to cut out, overlay, rotate, and measure, then label each pair congruent, similar, or neither.
Show rectangles measuring 3 by 5 and 6 by 8, then ask students to explain why matching angles do not guarantee similarity.
Run a card sort matching figure pairs with congruent, similar, or neither labels, then have partners check side ratios and angles.
Use a classroom floor plan and its scale to calculate an actual wall length and decide whether the drawing is similar to the room.
