What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find missing lengths and areas in scaled figures. They use a given scale to move between drawing measurements and actual measurements, then explain how area changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly find scaled lengths and areas for polygons, circles, and composite figures. They show that multiplying lengths by a factor of k multiplies area by k².

Common Misconceptions

Students often multiply area by the linear scale factor instead of its square. They may reverse the scale ratio, mix units, or forget square units.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A map uses 1 cm = 8 m. A rectangular field measures 3.5 cm by 2 cm. Find its actual dimensions and area.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs grid paper, rulers, and floor-plan cutouts to make a 1:2 enlargement and compare the two areas.

  2. Ask students to explain why doubling every length makes the area four times larger, using a drawing and an equation.

  3. Run a card-match race with sets showing scale ratios, drawing dimensions, actual dimensions, and corresponding areas.

  4. Have students measure the classroom, create a scaled floor plan, and calculate the actual floor area.
