What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students measure circles and compare circumference to diameter to recognize the constant ratio π. They use radius or diameter to calculate circumference in math problems and practical situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain that circumference divided by diameter is always about π. They choose πd or 2πr correctly, calculate accurately, and label answers with linear units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse radius and diameter, then substitute the radius into πd. Some think the ratio changes with circle size or that π equals exactly 3.14. Others label circumference in square units.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Two circles have diameters of 8 cm and 12 cm. Using 3.14 for π, find both circumferences and explain how the results show a proportional relationship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure jar lids with string and rulers, then calculate and compare each circumference-to-diameter ratio.

  2. Write why doubling a circle’s diameter doubles its circumference, using a table or sketch as evidence.

  3. Play a card sort matching circle diagrams, given measurements, formulas, and circumference values.

  4. Estimate how far a bicycle wheel travels in 20 rotations, then calculate the distance using its measured diameter.
