What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a circle’s equation to its center, radius, and graph. They write or rewrite equations, solve for unknown values, and interpret these features in real situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the center and radius from an equation, including after completing the square. They graph accurately, write equations from given information, and explain what the center and radius mean in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often read the center signs incorrectly, naming h instead of negative h from a term such as (x + h). They may confuse the radius with its square or graph only four points. Some also confuse points inside a circle with points on its boundary.
How to Assess It
- Give students (x - 3)² + (y + 2)² = 25. Ask them to name the center and radius, sketch the circle, and test whether (6, 2) lies on it.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a coordinate grid on the floor, anchor string at a chosen center, and have students mark points one radius away.
Ask students to explain why (x + 4)² gives a center coordinate of negative 4 and defend their reasoning with substitution.
Play Circle Equation Match, where teams pair equation cards with center, radius, and graph cards.
Model a sprinkler’s coverage with a circle, then decide whether given garden coordinates receive water and explain the boundary meaning.
