Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.GR.7.5

MathGrades 9–12Apply geometric and algebraic representations of conic sections.

The Standard

Graph and solve mathematical and real-world problems that are modeled with an equation of a parabola. Determine and interpret key features in terms of the context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect a parabola’s equation, graph, and key features. They use vertices, intercepts, symmetry, and reasonable domains to answer questions about mathematical and real situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students graph a parabola accurately from its equation and label the vertex, axis of symmetry, intercepts, maximum or minimum, and domain. They solve for unknown values and explain what each answer means in the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the sign of h in vertex form or choose the wrong opening direction. They may use roots outside the contextual domain. They may confuse the maximum value with the vertex’s horizontal coordinate.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A fountain’s path is y = -0.5(x - 4)² + 8 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 8. Sketch the path, then state its maximum height and landing points.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Record a foam ball toss in slow motion, plot several frame coordinates, and fit a parabola to estimate its highest point.

  2. Ask students to explain which features of y = -2(x - 3)² + 8 describe a fountain’s path and what each means.

  3. Run a card match with equations, graphs, vertices, axes of symmetry, intercepts, and matching contextual statements.

  4. Give students a satellite dish cross-section and ask them to use its width and depth to locate the receiver.
