What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find what fraction of a circle is represented by a central angle. They use that fraction to calculate arc length or sector area in diagrams and real situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the radius and central angle from a diagram or context. They calculate accurately, leave exact answers in terms of π when asked, and label linear and square units correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the diameter where the radius is needed. They may confuse the curved arc length with the sector’s area. Some use the central angle directly instead of dividing it by 360°.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A circle has radius 12 cm and a 75° central angle. Find the arc length and sector area, showing each setup.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students paper circles, protractors, and string to measure a sector, then compare measured arc length and area with calculated values.

  2. Ask students to explain why a 72° sector has one-fifth of the circle’s circumference and area.

  3. Run a card sort matching circle diagrams, arc length expressions, sector area expressions, and final answers.

  4. Model a rotating sprinkler and have students calculate the watered boundary length and area for different turning angles.
