Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.7.GR.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.7.GR.2.1
Given a mathematical or real-world context, find the surface area of a right circular cylinder using the figure’s net.
- MA.7.GR.2.2
Solve real-world problems involving surface area of right circular cylinders.
- MA.7.GR.2.3
Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving volume of right circular cylinders.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read diagrams and word problems to identify dimensions and the measurement needed. They calculate surface area or volume for prisms, composite figures, and right circular cylinders.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can decide whether a problem asks for surface area, volume, or a missing dimension. They substitute values correctly, calculate with pi, and label answers with square or cubic units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the diameter as the radius or leave out one circular base when finding surface area. They may confuse lateral area with total surface area or use square units for volume.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A closed cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Find its total surface area and volume in terms of pi, and label each answer with units.

Ways to Teach It
Measure a food can with rulers and string, then calculate its surface area and volume and compare results with a partner.
Write which measurement answers each prompt: paint a tank, fill a tank, wrap a box, or pack a crate.
Play a formula-match relay by pairing figure cards, dimension cards, formulas, and unit labels, then solve one matched problem.
Compare two soup can designs that hold the same volume and decide which uses less label and metal.
