What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find how much material covers the outside of a cylinder in a real situation. They identify whether the problem includes both bases, one base, or only the curved surface.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct dimensions and decide which surfaces are included. They calculate accurately with 2πrh + 2πr², show their work, and report square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use diameter as the radius or leave out one circular base. Some confuse surface area with volume or forget to use square units. Others use the slant height instead of the vertical height.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A closed can has radius 4 cm and height 10 cm. Find its total surface area in terms of π and label the units.

Ways to Teach It
Wrap a paper label around a can, trace both bases, measure each piece, and compare the total area with the formula.
Ask students to explain why the curved surface area equals the cylinder’s circumference multiplied by its height.
Run a card sort matching cylinder diagrams, dimensions, surface area expressions, answers, and square units.
Calculate the sheet metal needed to make a closed cylindrical rain barrel, then add 10 percent for cutting waste.
