What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. They multiply fractions, judge whether products grow or shrink, and interpret division involving unit fractions. They apply these operations in word problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student finds common denominators, works accurately with mixed numbers, and simplifies results. They multiply fractions and use models or reasoning to explain product size and unit fraction division.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract both numerators and denominators. They may mishandle mixed numbers or forget to simplify. Some assume multiplication always increases a value or reverse the wrong quantity when dividing.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: calculate 2 1/3 minus 3/4 and 5/6 times 1 1/2, then draw a model for 3 divided by 1/4.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips to model 2/3 plus 3/4, then have them record equivalent fractions and the sum.
Ask, "Will 6 times 3/4 be greater or less than 6?" Students write a claim and defend it with a model.
Play Fraction Operation Match: students pair expression cards with answer cards, earning a point only after explaining their method.
Use a recipe card for 3/4 cup per batch, then ask students to scale it for 2 1/2 batches.
