What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather numerical data, such as measurements, and categorical data, such as favorite snacks. They organize the results in tables or graphs and use them to answer questions and make comparisons.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students collect data with a survey or measurement and organize it in a table. They choose a suitable graph, label it correctly, and use the display to compare values or answer questions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat categories as numbers or place numerical data into unrelated groups. They may skip labels, use uneven scales, or read the tallest bar as the value instead of using the scale.
How to Assess It
- Give students the data set 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5. Ask them to represent it, then write one true comparison based on their display.

Ways to Teach It
Have students measure ten pencils, record the lengths, and build a line plot with a labeled number line.
Show a class bar graph and ask, "What claim can you make, and which values from the graph support it?"
Give pairs data cards to sort, graph, and trade, then award a point for each correct interpretation of a partner's graph.
Use cafeteria lunch choices to create a frequency table and decide how many servings of each option the kitchen should prepare.
