Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.2.GR.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.2.GR.1.1
Identify and draw two-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes. Figures are limited to triangles, rectangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons and oct...
- MA.2.GR.1.2
Categorize two-dimensional figures based on the number and length of sides, number of vertices, whether they are closed or not and whether the edges are curved ...
- MA.2.GR.1.3
Identify line(s) of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name flat shapes and describe them by sides, vertices, and other visible features. They compare figures and decide whether a line divides one into matching mirror halves.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name and sort shapes even when they are rotated, stretched, or different sizes. They can describe sides and vertices and draw lines that create matching mirror halves.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify shapes by size, color, or direction instead of their defining features. They may call a rotated square a diamond or mark lines that make equal areas but not mirror halves.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show a rotated square and an isosceles triangle. Students name each, list its sides and vertices, then draw every line of symmetry.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs pattern blocks and small mirrors; students sort by sides and vertices, then test possible symmetry lines with the mirror.
Show a rotated square and ask, “Did the shape change?” Students justify answers by counting sides and vertices.
Play shape detective bingo using clue cards such as, “I have five sides,” or, “I have exactly one line of symmetry.”
Take a school photo walk; students sketch two flat shapes they find and mark any line that creates mirror halves.
