What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find where a flat shape can be split into matching mirror halves. They identify all possible symmetry lines, including when a shape has none.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students draw every symmetry line on familiar shapes, including vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. They verify each line by folding or comparing reflected halves.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any line through the center creates symmetry. They may miss diagonal lines or count lines that make equal areas but not mirror images.

How to Assess It

Give students a rectangle, square, heart, and scalene triangle. Ask them to draw every symmetry line, then mark figures with none.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students paper shapes to fold, then have them trace each crease that makes two matching halves.

  2. Show a shape with three possible lines and ask, “Which lines make mirror halves, and how can you prove it?”

  3. Students sort shape cards by zero, one, two, or more symmetry lines, then check each choice with a small mirror.

  4. Take a classroom photo hunt for symmetrical objects, then sketch each object and add its symmetry lines.
