- MA.K.GR.1.4
Find real-world objects that can be modeled by a given two- or three-dimensional figure. Figures are limited to circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, spheres...
- MA.K.GR.1.5
Combine two-dimensional figures to form a given composite figure. Figures used to form a composite shape are limited to triangles, rectangles and squares.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name flat and solid shapes by features such as sides, corners, faces, and curved surfaces. They compare shapes and join smaller pieces to make a new figure.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names shapes even when their size, color, or position changes. The student compares features and uses smaller shapes or solids to build a larger figure.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a square a diamond when it is turned. They may sort shapes by color or size instead of features. They often confuse circles with spheres and squares with cubes.
How to Assess It
- Give each child a square, triangle, cube, sphere, and two paper triangles. Ask the child to name each shape, compare two shapes, and join the triangles to make a new shape.

Ways to Teach It
Set out pattern blocks and linking cubes; students build one flat picture and one solid structure, then name the pieces they used.
Show a square turned on one corner and ask, “What proves this is still a square?”
Play Shape Sort Relay: students place cards under flat or solid headings, then explain one choice using a feature.
Take a classroom shape hunt; students sketch one object shaped like a rectangle and one shaped like a cylinder.
