What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine figures and identify defining features such as sides, angles, faces, edges, vertices, and parallel lines. They use those features to sort and name figures accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name figures using sides, angles, faces, edges, vertices, and parallel or perpendicular lines. They explain why a figure can belong to more than one group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by color, size, or orientation instead of mathematical properties. They may think a square is not a rectangle, or confuse faces, edges, and vertices on solid figures.
How to Assess It
- Give students a square and a square pyramid. Ask them to name every category each belongs to and list two attributes supporting each classification.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort shape cards and solid models into labeled hoops, then move figures that belong in more than one group.
Ask, "Is every square a rectangle?" Students write a claim and support it with defining attributes.
Play Attribute Guessing: one student gives clues about sides, angles, faces, edges, or vertices while classmates identify the figure.
Photograph objects around school, then label each matching shape or solid and list the attributes that support the match.
