Florida B.E.S.T. MA.1.GR.1.1

Math1st GradeIdentify and analyze two- and three-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes.

The Standard

Identify, compare and sort two- and three-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes. Figures are limited to circles, semi-circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, hexagons, spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones and cylinders.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name flat shapes and solid figures and tell which type each one is. They compare and sort them using sides, corners, faces, edges, and curved surfaces.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names the target figures when they are rotated, resized, or shown in different colors. They sort a mixed set accurately and explain each choice using defining features.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use color, size, or position to sort, so a turned square becomes a diamond. They may think a square cannot be a rectangle or confuse a rectangle with a rectangular prism. They may count lines in a drawing instead of the actual faces, edges, corners, and curved surfaces.

How to Assess It

Show a rotated square, trapezoid, hexagon, cube, cone, and cylinder. Ask students to name each, circle the solids, then compare two using one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cutout shapes and solid models; have them sort into flat and solid groups, then resort using student chosen attribute cards.

  2. Display a square and rectangle and ask, "How are they alike, and what makes the square a special rectangle?"

  3. Play Attribute Bingo: call clues such as "six straight sides" or "two circular faces," and students cover the matching figure.

  4. Run a classroom shape hunt; students sketch one object, label its figure, and list two defining attributes.
