Florida B.E.S.T. MA.K.GR.1.3
The Standard
Compare three-dimensional figures based on their similarities, differences and positions. Sort three-dimensional figures based on their similarities and differences. Figures are limited to spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare spheres, cubes, cones, and cylinders by features such as flat surfaces, curved surfaces, and pointed ends. They sort the solids by a clear rule and describe where one is placed compared with another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student sorts a mixed set by a stated feature, such as flat surfaces, curved surfaces, or pointed ends. The student compares two solids and uses words such as above, below, beside, in front of, or behind.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every curved solid a ball or confuse a cylinder with a cone. They may sort by color or size, or think a cylinder changes shape when turned.
How to Assess It
- Set out two cubes, two cylinders, one sphere, and one cone. Ask each student to sort them by one shape feature, explain the rule, then place the sphere above a cube.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a bag of solid models to sort by rolling, stacking, flat surfaces, or pointed ends, then explain their rule.
Show a cube and cylinder and ask, “How are they alike, how are they different, and which is beside the cone?”
Play Mystery Solid by describing one hidden model with shape and position clues, then having students point to the match.
Match cans, dice, balls, and party hats to solid models, then compare how each object is shaped and how it moves.
