What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares by noticing sides, corners, and curved edges. They sort figures by a chosen rule and describe each figure’s position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can group figures using sides, corners, or curved edges and explain the sorting rule. The student can compare two figures and use position words accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a square is not a rectangle, or that a turned triangle becomes a different figure. They may sort by color or size instead of sides, corners, and edges.
How to Assess It
- Give each student six shape cards and two hoops. Say, “Sort the cards, explain your rule, then place the circle above the square.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students shape cutouts and hoops, then have them sort by number of sides, corners, or curved edges.
Show two shape cards and ask, “What is the same, what is different, and where is each shape?”
Play Shape Detective by giving clues about sides, corners, and position while students point to the matching figure.
Take a classroom shape walk and record examples of circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares found on signs, furniture, and objects.
