What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a figure by counting its sides and vertices and noticing attributes such as straight sides and equal lengths. They draw figures that match spoken or written clues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name figures with three, four, five, six, or eight sides. They draw each figure from given clues and explain their choice using sides, vertices, and equal side lengths when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a shape by its size, color, or position instead of its sides and vertices. They may call every four-sided figure a square or think a rotated square is not a square.
How to Assess It
- Give students these clues: six straight sides and six vertices. Ask them to name the figure, draw it, and label its sides and vertices.

Ways to Teach It
Give students craft sticks to build named figures, then have them count and label each figure’s sides and vertices.
Ask students to explain in writing how they know a rectangle is different from a pentagon.
Play Shape Riddle Match by pairing clue cards, such as eight sides and eight vertices, with figure cards.
Take a classroom shape hunt and record objects that resemble triangles, rectangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, or octagons.
