What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and sort flat shapes and solid figures by their defining features. They describe sides, vertices, faces, edges, and curved surfaces, then use those features to compare figures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name, sort, and compare common flat shapes and solid figures. They explain choices using sides, vertices, faces, edges, or curved surfaces rather than color, size, or position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think color, size, or position changes a shape's name. They may not recognize a rotated square or triangle. They may also confuse flat shapes with solid figures or assume every four-sided shape is a square.
How to Assess It
- Show a triangle, rotated square, rectangle, cube, and cylinder. Ask students to name each figure and give one attribute that proves their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs attribute blocks and solid models to sort into hoops, then have them label each sorting rule.
Ask, "How are a square and a cube alike and different?" Students draw both and write or tell two comparisons.
Play Mystery Shape by reading attribute clues while students cover matching shapes on a picture board.
Run a classroom shape hunt where students sketch four objects, name each shape, and record one defining attribute.
