Florida B.E.S.T. MA.2.GR.1.2

Math2nd GradeIdentify and analyze two-dimensional figures and identify lines of symmetry.

The Standard

Categorize two-dimensional figures based on the number and length of sides, number of vertices, whether they are closed or not and whether the edges are curved or straight.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine flat figures and describe their sides, vertices, edges, and openings. They sort figures into groups using one or more of these attributes and explain their sorting rule.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately describe a figure using its visible attributes. They can sort the same set of figures in different ways and explain the rule used for each sort.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count vertices as sides or treat curved edges as straight sides. They may also think turning or resizing a figure changes its category, or that every drawn figure must be closed.

How to Assess It

Show a square, rectangle, circle, open four-segment figure, and irregular pentagon. Have students record each figure’s sides, vertices, edge type, closure, and one possible category.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs craft sticks and yarn to build figures, then label each by sides, vertices, edge type, and whether it is closed.

  2. Ask students to write how a square and rectangle are alike and different, including side lengths and vertices.

  3. Play an attribute sort game where students draw a figure card and place it under matching rule cards.

  4. Take a classroom shape walk, sketch four objects, and record each object’s sides, vertices, edge type, and closure.
