What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect spoken sounds to letters and use those connections to read simple words. They notice rhyme, separate and blend sounds, and follow print correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students recognize taught letters, produce their common sounds, and hear separate sounds in spoken words. They blend sounds to read simple words and track print from left to right.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse letter names with letter sounds or guess a word from the picture. They may also blend sounds out of order or treat each word as a single sound.
How to Assess It
- Show the letters m, s, a, and t, then ask students for each sound. Give them the word map and ask them to say each sound, then blend the word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build map, sat, and mat, then have them touch each letter while saying and blending the sounds.
Ask, "What sounds do you hear in sun?" Students say the sounds, count them on fingers, and draw one box per sound.
Play sound bingo with picture cards, calling a beginning sound while students cover a picture that starts with that sound.
Use classroom labels such as door, rug, and map, then have students find a label and point to its first letter and sound.
