What Students Need to Do

Students use letter-sound patterns, syllable types, and meaningful word parts to read unfamiliar words. They also read grade-level passages accurately, at a steady pace, and with natural expression.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students decode unfamiliar one-syllable and multisyllabic words by using sound patterns, syllables, roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They read grade-level text accurately, smoothly, and with phrasing that supports meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a word from its first letter or from context instead of reading every part. They may split syllables incorrectly, ignore prefixes and suffixes, or read accurately but without phrasing.

How to Assess It

Give students a short grade-level passage with three unfamiliar multisyllabic words. Ask them to read aloud, mark word parts, and explain how they decoded one word.

   Give pairs word-part cards to build, divide, and read multisyllabic words such as disagreement, transportation, and reusable.

   Ask students to mark pauses and stressed words in a short paragraph, then explain how their choices help listeners understand it.

   Play Word Detective Bingo, where students cover words after identifying a syllable pattern, prefix, suffix, or root named by the teacher.

   Use a restaurant menu or event flyer and have students decode unfamiliar words, then read the information aloud with clear phrasing.
