What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use sound-spelling patterns to read and write unfamiliar words. They break longer words into syllables and use prefixes, suffixes, and roots to decode each part.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read and spell unfamiliar one-syllable and multisyllabic words. They divide words into useful chunks, identify meaningful parts, blend sounds, and correct errors when a word does not sound right.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter, a picture, or sentence context instead of reading every part. They may split syllables incorrectly, miss vowel sounds, or fail to recognize familiar prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

How to Assess It

Ask students to read reusable, transportation, and flanter aloud, then mark syllables and meaningful word parts. Dictate careless and have students explain their spelling choices.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, base word, and suffix cards to build, read, divide, and write words such as disagreement and hopeful.

  2. Ask students to write how the parts of unpredictable help them read the whole word, then compare strategies with a partner.

  3. Play Syllable Sort by having teams place word cards under one, two, three, or four syllables and read each word aloud.

  4. Collect unfamiliar words from menus, signs, or directions, then have students mark syllables and word parts before reading them aloud.
