What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into pronounceable parts, then blend the parts to read the whole word. They use spelling patterns, syllable types, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to read and spell words in sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read unfamiliar words such as miscalculation and reusable without guessing. They can mark useful syllables and word parts, blend them smoothly, and spell a comparable word from dictation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split words after any consonant instead of checking vowel sounds and familiar syllable patterns. They may treat prefixes and suffixes as separate syllables every time, or guess from the first few letters.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Students read miscalculation and reusable aloud, mark the word parts, then write disagreement from dictation. Have them circle any helpful root, prefix, or suffix.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards labeled re, act, ion, predict, and able; students build words, divide the syllables, and read each word aloud.

  2. Students answer the prompt, "How did the parts of unhelpfulness help you read and spell the word?"

  3. Play a relay where teams draw a word, mark syllables and word parts, pronounce it, then earn a point for correct spelling.

  4. Use a cafeteria menu or school notice; students highlight three long words, decode them, and label roots, prefixes, or suffixes.
