What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into roots, prefixes, suffixes, and syllables, then blend the parts to read the whole word. They use suffixes to identify meaning and explain changes in part of speech.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read unfamiliar multisyllabic words by using roots, affixes, and syllable patterns. They explain that adding a suffix such as -ful or -less can turn a noun into an adjective.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a long word from its first syllable instead of reading every part. They may confuse roots with whole words or explain a suffix's meaning without naming how it changes the word's job.

How to Assess It

Give students the words telephone, careless, and transportation. Ask them to mark meaningful parts or syllables, read each word aloud, and explain how -less changes care.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word-part tiles such as tele, phone, care, less, help, and ful to build, read, and sort words by part of speech.

  2. Ask students to explain how adding -ful to hope changes its meaning and word job, then use hope and hopeful in sentences.

  3. Run a syllable relay where teams divide word cards, read each chunk, blend the whole word, and check it in a dictionary.

  4. Have students find three multisyllabic words on a lunch menu, package, or school notice, then circle roots and underline affixes.
