What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students say the usual sound for each consonant and identify the short and long sounds of a, e, i, o, and u. They blend three sounds to read CVC words. They segment spoken CVC words and write the matching letters.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a consonant letter, students produce its usual sound without a picture cue. They give short and long sounds for each vowel. They read unfamiliar CVC words, then spell dictated CVC words in sound order.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say a letter name instead of its sound, or say /buh/ instead of /b/. They often confuse short e and i or expect every vowel to use its long sound. When spelling, they may write only the first and last sounds.

How to Assess It

Show b, m, s, a, e, i, o, and u, then ask for each consonant sound and both sounds for each vowel. Have students read map, sit, and log, then write sun from dictation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students push counters into three sound boxes for spoken words, then replace each counter with a magnetic letter and read the word.

  2. Ask students to explain how changing the middle letter in map to o changes the word, then write and read mop.

  3. Play CVC Bingo with picture cards, having students segment each picture name, find its printed word, and cover the matching square.

  4. Give pairs classroom labels such as bin, rug, map, and lid to read, spell aloud, and place on the matching objects.
