What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use consonant digraphs, trigraphs, blends, r-controlled vowels, final e, and vowel teams to read words. They read words with endings and split regular two-syllable words into parts. They also spell regular one-syllable words by matching sounds to letters.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read unfamiliar words such as splash, catch, fork, hope, team, jumping, and napkin without guessing from pictures. They split napkin into nap and kin, then blend the whole word. They spell regular one-syllable words such as brush and float with the correct patterns.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give each letter its own sound in sh or tch, or collapse a blend into one sound. They may ignore final e or endings, guess vowel teams, or read two-syllable words without splitting them. When spelling, they may leave out sounds in blends or forget the pattern marking a long vowel.

How to Assess It

Ask students to read splash, catch, fork, cube, boat, jumped, and napkin. Then dictate brush, storm, kite, and seed for students to write.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build ship, catch, frog, cake, and rain, then change one spelling pattern to make a new word.

  2. Ask students to write where they would split sunset, then explain how each part helped them read the whole word.

  3. Play Phonics Sort using word cards and headings for digraphs, blends, r-controlled vowels, final e, vowel teams, endings, and two-syllable words.

  4. Have students search classroom labels and lunch menus for target patterns, then read each word aloud.
