What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use syllables, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to read unfamiliar words. They read grade-level text accurately, smoothly, and with expression that matches the meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students decode unfamiliar multisyllabic words without relying on guesses. They read grade-level text accurately, at a steady pace, and with phrasing that supports meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or context instead of reading every word part. They may also read accurately but too slowly, or ignore punctuation and phrasing.
How to Assess It
- Give students three unfamiliar multisyllabic words and a 100-word grade-level passage. Ask them to mark word parts, read the words, then read the passage aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to cut into syllables and affixes, rebuild, pronounce, and use in sentences.
Ask students to explain in writing how prefixes, suffixes, or roots helped them read two unfamiliar words.
Play a word-building relay where teams combine root, prefix, and suffix cards, then read each completed word correctly.
Have students read a school announcement aloud, marking pauses, stressed words, and unfamiliar multisyllabic words before presenting it.
